STATEMENT
Joshua D. McCauley
Artist Statement
The work that I have created in the past few years is very diverse in
styles, techniques, size, and mediums. I donnt believe in one
particular way to create art; I have found that the subjects that make
their way into my work grow from the same tree, however, the approach
is never set in stone. I am very interested in politics, social
behaviour, religion, nature, and the way they affect us all whether
there is clarity of this fact or not.
The pieces I am making now go back to my minimalist roots. I am trying to combine the complex aspects of our society with the simplistic beauty of nature. The
pieces are on white panels with matching white frames to represent
purity. Each piece has an acrylic transferred image and one animal
delicately drawn in with graphite. The dynamics between the transfer
and graphite produce an illusion. One almost thinks that the animal is
part of the transfer because of the precision of the drawing. Each
piece has itts own presence and statement, when combined together on
the wall they create a unique environment and experience.
Installation and 3d work has also stumbled it's way way in the series,
adding an entirely knew form of my expression. 3d work has allowed me
to fully create the environment that i seek. I have been calling it
the Prey Seriess because we are all prey or predators. I believe
that it is very important to create something pleasing to eye but even
more important to create something pleasing for the intellect. I am
mainly self-taught and have worked and experimented extremely hard to
develop the styles and techniques I now possess, as for my ideas I only
hope that I will never be without them.
