Born in Bangkok, Rujanee Mahakanjana is a native of Thailand, now living in Chicago and teaching at the International Academy of Design and Technology, the Illinois Institute of Art Chicago, and Westwood College. Her background in interior architecture, symbolized by her fascination of a human body, influences most of her work in both two and three dimensional form and space. Her work philosophy is inspired by the idea of human life, social struggle, and interconnection between human experience and the surrounding, and how it can heighten an awareness of self and others.

My work is about space, in association with time, that is surrounding and within, and how it affects human life, situations, and decisions. In my work, I pay attention to the essence of the interior rather than the appearance of the exterior, space rather than form, contexts rather than objects. Our surroundings are intended to interact with our senses, generating personal responses and experiences. At the same time, what is deep inside every individual or the true nature of a being influences how one is affected by their surroundings.

I incorporate architectural construction materials to form, symbolizing masculinity, and the interior space to symbolize femininity. Most of my work is presented in the form of sculptures and installations that does not focus on the aesthetic of a commodified object, but provides the real experience that responds to specific situations.
