ARTIST BIO

Wendy Clinard is the Artistic Director of Clinard Dance Theatre, a global interdisciplinary ensemble founded in 1999. Her collaborative efforts with local and internationally-renowned musicians, dancers, and artists have resulted in the creation of five full works (Quest of Theseus, Shifting Landscapes, Unraveling Rhythms, Jondo Portraits, and From the Arctic to the Middle East: Broken Narratives by an American Flamenco Dancer) and several smaller choreographic pieces. Several of these works have toured the midwest as well as internationally in India and Syria.

After completing a BFA at The Art Institute of Chicago in 1993, Clinard embarked on a rigorous apprenticeship with flamenco dancer Edo Sie and augmented her studies in Spain with notable teachers such as Juana Amaya and Hiniesta Cortez. Clinard has taught for the past 15 years in schools, higher education, and dance/theatre/painting studios. Locally, she has taught for Chicago's Gallery37, DePaul University, Columbia College, College of Lake County, Salt Creek 2 Ballet, Homer Bryant Ballet, Dimitri Roudnev Ballet, and Redmoon Theatre.

Clinard is the principal instructor at Clinard Dance Theatre Studio, located in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, where she runs their adult and pre professional dance school. Through her company work Clinard has been an invited choreographer to Jacob's Pillow (Summer 2000) and The Birmingham Royal Ballet (Birmingham England (Fall 2001). The company has participated in a guest residency at the Hambidge Center in Rapbun, Georgia (Summer 2002) and at The Chicago Cultural Center's Dance Bridge Program (fall 2006 and Jan. 2010). Wendy has been a soloist and collaborator with Las Guitarras de EspaÃÆ'Æ'±a since 1999.

STATEMENT

Since its creation in 1999, Clinard Dance Theatre has offered original contemporary dance theatre works rooted in flamenco, outreach activities and year-round flamenco classes. The Company strives to create works which integrates the disciplines of flamenco and modern dance, painting, sculpture and video art. Since its inception, Clinard Dance Theatre has created five original works in additional to several smaller choreographic pieces. These larger works are the result of years of research, work and collaboration. Several of these works have toured the Midwest and internationally in India and Syria.

The Company has performed outreach work in Pilsen since December 2005, building and maintaining substantial inroads with the neighborhood's youth and nurturing the community's art scene. Clinard Dance has taken part in residencies with local schools, teaching at-risk youth the fundamental techniques of flamenco dance and its rhythm structure. Students of our outreach programs are encouraged to augment their studies at the Clinard Dance Studio for free. The Company began a new program at Jane Addams High School Fall of 2013 based on the methods used to create our latest work, From the Arctic to the Middle East. The Company regularly performs master classes at high schools and universities throughout the US.

A significant portion of the Company's programming goes toward serving the local Pilsen community. These classes and events attract students and spectators of all ages and backgrounds from all across the Chicagoland area, which also serves as a base audience for the Company's professional performances. The Company offers year-round classes from its Pilsen-based studio to students of all ages and levels as well as free monthly studio performances. Additional beginner flamenco classes are offered at Chicago's American Rhythm Center. These classes are augmented by special extended workshops.
