Artist Biography

Born the daughter of a civil engineer, and an educated artist in the midst of the tumultuous Iran-Iraq War, Sarvin Haghighi experienced great joys, and harsh challenges. In a very short while, the pendulum would swing from privilege and independence to experiencing war firsthand, and the most basic of freedoms revoked. Speech beyond the garden walls of one's home was not only censored, but grounds for imprisonment. Self-expression was now the charge of each individual to remedy - for Sarvin, the answer was art.

As a young girl, Sarvin took to painting -initially lost in childhood fantasy, and then eventually finding her voice amongst the oils and canvas. What she dare not speak on the streets of her native Tehran intuitively flowed through her when she took to the easel. There she could capture every cherished memory of childhood; honor time-held traditions of her people; and issue commentary on the social, political and cultural dimensions of women's experiences in contemporary Middle Eastern society.

Exile would give birth to global citizenry. Her immediate family would eventually find themselves spread throughout the world. A new, hybrid reality, would give way, where East meets West, and diversity would be the norm. While passion for her Persian roots provides continual inspiration for the young artist, it's the cross-cultural exposure that provides universal subtext to her work. A single voice once censored, now amplifies the voices of many the world over who long for peace and freedom.

Artist Biography

Poetry has always been a major part of Persian culture and for me, it has always been part of who I was and who I became. We grew up reading Rumi poems. Rumi was a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic. With all the media and its negative portrayal of Iran, I feel responsible to share part of our beautiful culture through my art. All works are mixed media and the calligraphy is also done myself. I want to share with everyone part of our culture which might be alien to the majority; love, wine, belief and hope in a way that was never shown before and all through Rumi.
