34TH ANNUAL ARTISTSS OPEN HOUSE

Visual art provides the stage for theater, music and dance at the 34th Annual Artistss Open House, a combination of a curated art show and self-guided walking tours in a garden setting. The Artistss Open House is the first weekend in October. Hosted by the Chicago Arts District, it is the first event of the all-city Chicago Artistss Month.



More than 80 artists will offer their work in 50 galleries and private studios participating in the 34th Annual Artistss Open House. An opening night gala will kick-off at 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 1, when many artists unveil new and cutting-edge work. Hours on Saturday, October 2, and Sunday, October 3, are 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m.



The Open House will take place along South Halsted Street (800W) from 17th Street to Canalport Avenue (2000S) and along 18th Street from Peoria to Jefferson. The curated show

(CS: 34) will be held in a space at 2003 South Halsted Street. Curators are Kimberly Aubuchon of "Unit B Gallery," 1733 S. Des Plaines; Cynthia West of the Chicago Arts District, 1945 S. Halsted; and Nick Chupein of IITTs College of Architecture.



Among the art works to be featured will be watercolors, oil paintings, acrylic paintings, folk paintings, paintings on wood, etchings, found-object sculpture, steel sculpture, mixed media photography, prints and artists books, graphic arts, illustrations, fashions and textiles, jewelry, (including porcelain jewelry), ceramics, screen-printed ceramics, Haitian Voodoo art, wood construction and fiber installations.




River Northhs Aldo Castillo Gallery will join the Artistss Open House at 1835 S. Halsted Street. "Eyes on Pilsen" will feature the work of three artists, Juan Jose Molina from Colombia, Rodolfo Abularach from Guatemala, and Juan Pedro Paz from Uruguay, the show will be curated by Aldo Castillo.



The Friday night reception will open with four bands performing at the Fire Arts Garden Stage, 19th and Peoria. The bands are "Twang Bang," "Mystery Band," "Seeking Wonderland," and "Son Trinidad." A strolling minstrel, Urban Djin, will entertain all evening long.



The Luna Negra Dance Theater, Chicagoos No. 1 Latino Contemporary Dance Company, will perform and talk about the background and creation of their works, in an exciting lecture demonstration.



Hourly theater performances, for adults and children, start at 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Fire Arts Stage and surrounding garden area. Groups appearing include Iconoclast Theater Project, a puppet extravaganza; Crew of Patches, which will present Shakespearees "Twelfth Night"; The 20% Theater Company Chicago, which will explore womenns stories; The Rubicon Circus Project, presenting clowns and jugglers; and Ewers and Prejean Theater, which will offer solo performance pieces.



Ewers and Prejean Theater also will present a one-act play about falling victim to a promise of fortune on a reality TV show. This will be at 643 W. 18th St., second floor, 8:00 p.m. Friday, and at 2:00, 4:00 and 6:00 on Saturday and Sunday.




Iconoclast Theater Project will present "Seven Sisters," a dance/theater piece inspired by Greek myths, at the Charcoll Gallery, 1826 S. Halsted, at 7:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday evenings.



Award-winning gardens as well as family and artistss gardens and courtyards will be open for everyonees enjoyment. Some of the neighborhoodds unique architectural details can be seen from these outdoor areas.



The Chicago Arts Districtts roots reach back to the1960s when the Podmajersky family, local developers, started to revitalize the area in Pilsen East by creating art studios around a now famous garden.
