NIEU Art Department in the showPODs
May 1st through June 31, 2012 - the showPODs along the 1800 blk of South Halsted St.
EXHIBITION WILL RUN MAY 1-JUNE 31, 2012. TWO ARTISTS' RECEPTIONS WILL TAKE PLACE DURING THE CHICAGO ART DISTRICT'S 2ND FRIDAY GALLERY NIGHT ON FRIDAY, MAY, 11 AND FRIDAY, JUNE 8 FROM 6:00 TO 10:00 PM.

Northeastern Illinois University's (NEIU) art department is pleased to announce the exhibition of its art students at the Chicago Arts District in Pilsen. The seven (6 feet deep by 16 feet wide approx.) "showPODs" are the front windows of vacant commercial spaces that have been modified to display art at street level designed by the Chicago Arts District. The Chicago Arts District describes their "showPOD" spaces along South Halsted St. as:

"...high exposure exhibition space, compact, dynamic, unmanned, and designed to support concepts of art experimentation and installation. Developed by the Chicago Arts District, showPOD creates an instant art experience in the non-traditional space and format of 24/7/365 exposure to art installation. showPOD by design, can be viewed by anyone at anytime during the life of its installation, allowing a rich public art experience that breaks down the traditional limits of gallery space or museum."

This exhibition supports NEIU's art department's vision to offer students the opportunity to prepare themselves for their careers as artists outside of school by exposing their work to a wide audience, building professional relationships with the art community and learning all aspects of exhibition development while still in school. We emphasize the importance of critical and analytical skills and promote the values of independent problem solving, visual literacy, and cultural awareness. Our intention is to foster professional success, community involvement, and lifelong learning and creative activity.

Each area of concentration (Ceramics, Graphic Design, Metals, Painting & Drawing, Photography, Printmaking & Sculpture) will be representing the artistic vision and accomplishments of our current students in a solo or collaborative exhibition within a window space along Halsted St.
